PhD Research
The field of research in Art is very much open to experimentation and innovative methods of production and dissemination, and we here at Reading wish to encourage the development of PhD models in art research which explore this terrain. Emerging and original practices demand new forms that question both theory and practice without presupposing where exactly the distinction falls.
We welcome theoretical, practical and curatorial proposals which test the boundaries between theory and practice. We are particularly interested in interdisciplinary and cross-institutional modes of theory and practice, and research which refuses to acknowledge fixed boundaries between the practice, theory, history and philosophy of art, and which migrates between the production, mediation, distribution, and critical analysis of art.
An important and emerging area of research within the Department is the publication of text-based work both as practice and as theory as practice. Also welcomed are curatorial collaborations which develop exhibitions as spaces for critical examination, communication, and interpretation of contemporary theory and practice, and theory as practice.
Curatorial Doctoral Programme with Zurich, University of the Arts
The Department of Art at the University of Reading in collaboration with the Postgraduate Programme in Curating is offering a new doctoral program for research in and as curatorial and/or artistic practice. Research students are enrolled at the University of Reading and the Postgraduate Programme in Curating is hosting a research group and offers opportunities for teaching and lecturing in Higher Education. The new PhD programme specializes in offering established curators, artists, art critics and designers from all disciplines the critical framework to focus on specific curatorial and cultural research topics in order to earn a Doctorate from the University of Reading through a combined theoretical and practical approach.
